Travis Bedelgeuse uses the imagery of botany,
evolutionary biology and geological formations to create his collages. Using
razor blades and glue, he meticulously pieces together works that transform
commonplace subject matters into art that makes you stop and think. Since 2009,
he has been constructing his collages out of bits of old newspaper, magazines and
anything else he finds interesting.
Bedelgeuese hails from the Northwest, and the
diverse and unquestioningly beautiful nature found in the region is prevalent
in his art. Revitalized and reinforced by the positive energy he finds all
around him, Bedelgeuse has no plans of stopping anytime soon. CULTURE was lucky enough to grab a few
minutes of his time.

What’s something people might not know about you?

People who know me, know what Im about. For everyone else these are my priorities:
Wellness, family and art. Wellness is my top priority, which means I train hard
everyday and eat well. Being healthy allows me to do everything else I want to
do. Without my health I cannot have my family, my art or anything else. I
m all about that
life.

What and/or who inspires you?

I am inspired by the natural beauty of the world. There is an abundant
positive energy source to pull from that I create within myself. It is 100
percent a choice to stay positive and to love unconditionally. I still love those
who left me, gave up on me and even ignored me. As I become stronger, this
manifests in my work. Each one of these collages is an expression of my
personal journey of regrowth and renewal.

Do you have a favorite piece and why?

I cant say I have one, the work Im doing now is personally very exciting as Im taking this
concept more into actual space instead of just cut paper and digital collage.
Wheat paste collages and sculptural work are some of the most fun to do.

Are there any projects that you’re working on that you’d like to talk
about?

I did a collage installation this month, bringing my art into 3-D space.
It is going to have life-sized human pop-up anatomical charts, hundreds of
paper butterflies and bugs, thousands of silk flower petals and leaves. Also,
hundreds of my paper cutouts of different botanicals and zoology all from land
animals to sea life. I
ve also created these crystal hearts for the project, which are basically actual
anatomical heart models given the bedelgeuse makeover, with crystals, minerals
and flowers bursting out of them. Currently also in preliminary planning for an
art and science themed exhibition at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, and
doing visual art design for an exhibition in Tokyo as part of a fashion trade
show in the fall.

What are your thoughts on the legalization of cannabis?

As it turns out, I have two separate day jobs involved in the medical
marijuana industry! I do graphics and social media for a collective, and I work
with a Latin-style restaurant that regularly hosts cannabis cooking classes.
Needless to say I
m 100 percent for legalization.
