As one of the legendary icons of rap, O’Shea Jackson (Ice Cube) made his mark in the 1980s as a standout member of NWA. After leaving the group, a successful solo rap career in the 1990s cemented him as a household name, and Jackson soon expanded his entertainment cred with a critically-acclaimed role in John Singleton’s 1991 Oscar-nominated film, Boyz n the Hood. That same year, his EP, Kill at Will, became the first hip-hop EP to go both gold and platinum. Not satisfied with even these extensive accomplishments, Jackson went on to write the 1995 comedy Friday and the sequels, Next Friday and Friday After Next, as well as staring in Singleton’s next film, Higher Learning. With his film and TV career taking up his time (he produced Showtime’s Barbershop series and TBS’s Are We There Yet?), Jackson has recently returned to the hip-hop arena, releasing his ninth studio album I am the West, last September. Catch him in April at the Grove to relive his legendary hits and check out his new independent material—and then keep your eyes peeled for his next film role in the big-screen adaptation of the 1970s TV series, Welcome Back, Kotter.
