Just 2 months away from the November vote
and the polls in favor show a landslide victory.
A vast majority of as high as 90% of
Floridians—polled by both national and state-wide polls—support the medical use
of cannabis.

However, organizers of the campaign to put
Amendment 2 on the ballot remain cautiously optimistic about their chances in
November. There’s always the chance
that voters may turn up in smaller quantities to cast their vote, as this is a presidential
off- year election. But given the height of cannabis in mainstream society, polls
may flood with voters ready to practice their civic duties.

Support has stayed consistent since midsummer
when the 90% figure was first announced.
Since then, Oregon has joined Alaska in getting the topic of recreational
use on the ballot, showing good signs that the issue may be voted in.  In Alaska, it remains a tossup however.  In the last few months, support for
recreational reform appears to have dipped slightly.  Alaska was the first state in the nation to
legalize medical use via a change to the state’s constitution itself (2 years
ahead of Colorado and Nevada in 1998).

In addition, municipalities all over the
country in states where cannabis is now legal for medical use are taking the route
of Breckenridge Colorado, which was the first Colorado municipality to legalize
adult use ahead of the state.

In addition, the issue of low THC—or CBD
cannabinoid—medical use has also swept an additional 11 very conservative
states this year.  The issue of medical
efficacy of cannabis is clearly here to stay.

For that reason, it appears highly likely
that the state that turned the Presidential election in 2000 may very well
prove to be the gateway to cannabis reform in the United States this year.
