420 Smoke Session Etiquette: Four Rules to Abide By

[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]Y[/dropcap]ou may be a novice in the world of cannabis smoking sessions, but you don’t have to make it obvious. Learn the basics of session etiquette to avoid a potential cultural faux pas, like bumming too much cannabis, or rudely interrupting the smoke rotation. Here are CULTURE’s four most basic rules of proper etiquette for a cannabis smoke session.

Rule 1: It’s NOT about how much you can smoke

Since we’re not young anymore, no one cares how much smoking or dabbing you can handle, as though it’s a badge of honor. Smoking large amounts of cannabis is only going to increase your tolerance, and you can only get so high. It’s called The Tolerance Factor. Once your tolerance is high from over-consumption, you won’t get super high anyways! To truly appreciate cannabis, you need balance—like any other substance. CULTURE would even recommend taking a three-day fast from cannabis from time to time, for the sole purpose of resetting your tolerance. In 2018, most people by now are familiar with the sticky green, and it’s unlikely that you will impress anyone.

Rule 2: Always match

Don’t be a mooch. Just don’t. If everyone throws down some cannabis and pitches in, then you don’t have to provide very much of your own supply. So match your friends—nug for nug, joint for joint or ounce for ounce. If they throw down a nug for a blunt, you throw down a nug. If they throw down an eighth for a super session, you throw down an eighth. Snoop Dogg perfectly portrayed “The Scavenger” in the film Half Baked, that “one guy” that also pops out of nowhere as soon as you light up, looking for a free session. It’s as though they can detect the smell of cannabis from a mile away. Sharing is caring, and is fine to an extent, but sharing goes both ways.

Rule 3: Puff puff pass (to the left)

This practice has been the norm for decades. If you need proof, check out reggae band Musical Youth’s 1982 hit song Pass the Dutchie (on the left hand side). When smoking a pre-roll or blunt, you should hit it a maximum of two times then pass it to your left. If you’re standing in a circle, the rotation will go clockwise, hence “pass to the left.” This rule applies in almost any region across the world, from Amsterdam to Los Angeles. When sharing a spliff or a pre-roll, watch your saliva, also, because no one wants to be handed a soggy spliff.

Rule 4: Don’t steal lighters

“Don’t steal” should be a pretty obvious rule, but you wouldn’t believe how often lighters are stolen during a smoking session. Exercise a little extra effort to not forget to return the lighter to the owner, especially if it’s a BIC lighter, the king of all lighters. BIC has sold over 15 billion lighters, and rest assured, millions of those were lost by cannabis consumers. If it comes down to it, buy yourself a Lighter Leash, so that other cannabis consumers can’t snatch your lighter. While you’re at it, don’t steal cannabis, either, and don’t accuse others of stealing your cannabis without proof. Things can get foggy, so losing your items can be an issue.
