Today, with the advent of the internet and social media, there are groups out there for just about any combination of interests you can think of. One of these unique and unusual groups is 420 Nurses, a social network for aspiring models who also enjoy cannabis.

The first line of the L.A. Weekly article on the organization reads, “Even in L.A., it’s still something of a taboo for a woman to brand herself as a pot-smoker,” revealing the truth that cannabis use has always been seen as something of a masculine thing. Now that the image of cannabis is receiving a makeover in the public eye, group founder Angeleno ChaCha VaVoom (Vanessa Sahagun) decided it was time to give models who imbibe a place to chat, hang out, and share tips.

“Smoking pot can be something useful, an opportunity,” VaVoom told L.A. Weekly. “We give young women the inspiration on an everyday basis to feel better about themselves.” VaVoom is currently expanding this operation into her own photo studio, where the women in her group can pose in cannabis-related shoots to be used by advertisers.

The organization also features a platform where women can pay to have their photos featured, and the group has expanded worldwide to include models in many areas who like to smoke.

These women are also landing other jobs outside the arena of modeling. Conventions and other events often hire them to work a booth where they give out samples and try products with customers, to be budtenders for the day, or to just provide added entertainment.

In an industry stereotyped as being cutthroat and competitive, sisterhood is being celebrated, through an unlikely outlet still sometimes associated with the masculine. This interesting advent in social media seems to be presenting all kinds of new and exciting opportunities, and hopefully soon other groups will follow suit.
