Machel Mclean’s Mizlove Promotions brings the funk and Caribbean beats to L.A. again with his annual Red Carpet Reggae Affair at the Orion Ballroom. Mclean pulls out all the stops on this socializing event, a high-brow affair in which guests deck out in their finest threads. Networking and promoting the love is the agenda, and the more-than 300 people who routinely drop in are treated to the spinning sounds of DJs Amazon Sound Crew, New Jersey’s traditional mixer, Killa One Sound, and L.A.’s hip hop-vibed Tazmania Sound.
This year, Jamaican dancehall reggae superstar Baby Cham will be in the house knocking out his hits, among them the legendary “Ghetto Story,” which made Rolling Stone’s No. 14 song of the year and No. 7 on Vibe’s list in 2006 (the album also featured guest performances by Alicia Keys and Rihanna, by the way). There’ll also be videos shown on large projection screens and a $500 cash prize for the most elegantly dressed lady, so shine up those ruby red stilts, girls, and strut your stuff. (Jane Mast)
