[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]O[/dropcap]n Sept.8, a 23-pound brick of cannabis crashed through the roof of the Donnelly’s family home. Most likely an illegal aircraft smuggling cannabis from Mexico unintentionally dropped the package from the sky into the home in Nogales, Arizona.

“The package likely fell out of the sky,” Nogales Police Department spokesman Detective Robert Fierros told ABC News. “We have seen ultralight [plane] activity in our town before, but never seen a package that is assumed to be from an ultralight fall so close to the border.” Detective Fierros says regular drug drops happen on the outskirts of Nogales and nearby Rio Rico.

The 23-pound parcel burst through the ceiling and landed directly on the Donnelly’s German shepherd’s dog cage. Neither the Donnelly’s or their German shepherd Hulk were injured in this unexpected event. Maya awoke to find a bundle taped in black plastic and a perfect hole in the ceiling of their carport.

Maya and Bill Donnelly declined to comment to ABC News.

Fierros says it could’ve played out far worse. “Thankfully, nobody was hurt,” he said. “Had this bundle actually fallen on someone or a pet there would have been some injuries. In this case, we were fortunate enough not to have to deal with that.” The Nogales Police Department responded by ramping up surveillance of the Donnelly’s neighborhood.

Police are currently in the process of determining whether the aircraft was manned or a pilotless drone. The damages are estimated at $500.
