OK, it’s time to name a celebrity or high-profile figure who’s known to smoke marijuana. Sure, sure, you’re gonna come up with the usual suspects: Cheech & Chong. Snoop Dogg. Doug Benson. Willie Nelson. Obama. Bob Marley . . . but this is mere low-hanging fruit. How about the un-usual suspects? The folks that people don’t normally think about when they envision a cannabis user. In fact, some of these people were even new to us.

And here’s the kicker: all these people are highly successful individuals in their fields. Here’s our short list:

Richard Branson

Richard Branson is the guy who owns Virgin everything (cell phones, record stores, airlines—you name it). He’s about to start selling tickets to people so they can fly to outer space because he can. He’s the 236th wealthiest individual on the planet, a self-made capitalist wonder and a hearty endorser of the wonderful, all-natural herbal creation.

Montel Williams

He’s so damn cool, so damn rich, so damn well-liked and so damn smart that he could run for president and I’d vote for him. His daytime talk show has been on for so long I can’t remember when it wasn’t on. And, yes, he uses marijuana to help him deal with multiple sclerosis. Montel just got cooler.

Ted Turner

Ever hear of CNN? Well, he owns that. The guy is a billionaire, he was TIME Magazine’s Man of the Year in 1991 and he doesn’t collect baseball cards—he buys baseball teams. Mr. Billionaire not only grew and smoked pot in his college dorm, he also owns the Kentucky Hemp Museum and regularly enjoys himself some down-home country cannabis.

Stephen King

Saying Stephen King has written a few books is like saying Genghis Kahn dabbled in real estate. The highly paid, well-educated writer has published more fiction (largely horror) in his lifetime than 10 authors combined. Most people don’t know that aside from being one of the most successful authors of our time, he is also a strong public proponent of legalizing cannabis. The awesome volume of his work alone debunks the image of the lazy pot smoker.

David Bowie

This pop musician, artist and entertainer has made so much money, you can actually invest in him. He’s rich not only because of the genius-level talent he employed creating music for the last 40 years, but also due to scrupulous business decisions that made him a pop success.

He’s very mainstream and presentable now because his fan base is grown up, and being a millionaire tends to get conservatives to like you. But in 1976 he was busted for possession of a half a pound of marijuana. That’s a lot of zig-zags, Ziggy!
