[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]S[/dropcap]chmidt’s Naturals, a subsidiary of the Unilever Plc, announced its launch of a cannabidiol (CBD) and hemp-based deodorant product line. Next September, the company will release its line of hemp oil-based deodorants, and in the fall, its line of CBD-infused deodorant products will be released.

The leadership behind Schmidt’s Naturals can no longer deny the lucrative potential that CBD offers. “CBD is probably the most powerful ingredient that we’re going to see over the next decade in the personal care market,” Michael Cammarata, chief executive officer of Schmidt’s Naturals, told BNN Bloomberg. In 2017, Schmidt’s natural was acquired by the massive international consumer goods company Unilever. Although the company operates independently, Unilever helps with R&D, legal resources and distribution.

The line will include hemp seed oil-based deodorant offerings with aroma combinations like Absinthe + Licorice or Patchouli + Hops. The benefits of adding CBD in deodorant products includes its purported antibacterial qualities. Both tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and CBD have been linked to antibacterial properties in studies since at least 1976. The trend has caught on since then. According to a recent analysis from Cowen & Co, nearly seven percent of Americans have tried using CBD products.

After the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp-derived goods containing CBD can be sold under certain restrictions. The Farm Bill for instance, reserved the right of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to regulate foods or supplements containing CBD, leading to a murky definition of what’s legal and what’s not. Not long after the latest Farm Bill, pharmacies like CVS Health Corp. and Walgreens Co. announced their intent to sell CBD-infused topical items without a prescription. CBD is often seen as a way to gradually and safely enter the larger cannabis industry, while THC-based products carry more legal baggage.

Schmidt’s Natural hemp-based products will be on shelves at Target Corp. locations beginning in September, and the CBD-based versions will be available in states that have legalized cannabis, according to Cammarata.
