[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]A[/dropcap] new study by Statistics Canada suggests that men are almost twice as likely to consume cannabis as women.

The data from the National Cannabis Survey, which was conducted in Canada, reveals that 16 percent of Canadians over 15 years old reported that they consumed cannabis in April, May or June of this past year. That is down from the first few months of the year.

The study also reveals that almost five million Canadians consumed cannabis in some form or other during that period. This included one quarter of men and 16 percent of women who said they planned to consume in the next three months.

The survey also suggests that men are almost twice as likely to use cannabis on a daily basis than their female counterparts. It also implied based on the data that men are more likely than women to use cannabis for non-medical purposes.

Additionally, four out of every 10 cannabis consumers who were surveyed said they purchased cannabis illegally, speaking to the high cannabis prices Canada is currently struggling with. Smoking was the most common way of consuming cannabis according to the survey, yet interestingly, women were almost three times more likely than men to have used cannabis in other ways, such as via edibles or topicals.

In three more months, Statistics Canada will have more data about the cannabis use patterns developing within the country. Since legalization, the country has taken many measures to protect its citizens and take a good look at cannabis consumption. The country has spent millions to fund health research, and hopes to support responsible use outside of the black market. As long as Canada keeps checking the data involved with legal cannabis, things will continue to improve in one of the pioneering legal countries.
