Netflix Original “Disjointed” Puts a Spotlight on the Cannabis Industry

Earlier this year, Netflix announced the release date for its latest sitcom Disjointed with a short teaser trailer that debuted on April 20. Today, its eager audience can finally “Netflix and chill” with Chuck Lorre’s newest series, starring Kathy Bates. Bates’ character, Ruth Whitefeather Feldman, is a renaissance woman of the cannabis world working as an activist, lawyer and owner of a medical cannabis dispensary in Los Angeles. “Kathy plays Ruth Whitefeather Feldman, a woman whose lifelong mission has been to decriminalize marijuana. She’s something of an icon in that movement,” Lorre shared, “The series is about what happens when that mission is accomplished. She is faced with running a legal cannabis establishment with her son and a staff of young budtenders. Business, family and romance are difficult—they’re harder [when] stoned.”

With the arrival of the cannabis-centered storyline, it is clear that cannabis culture in well on its way of entering the realm of mainstream entertainment. Hollywood appears to be wasting no time to jump aboard the fast moving train that is the modern cannabis narrative. While various pop culture films and documentaries have revolved around the cannabis conversation, Disjointed makes its way as the first sitcom on Netflix to do so.

Given its status as a streamed series, the show has much more liberty in its subject matter and dialogue than it would on traditional evening television. This freedom may aid in providing a fresh perspective on cannabis culture and the various lenses through which the story can be told. While films and shows in the past have primarily focused on cannabis consumers, Disjointed showcases the working professional in the cannabis industry. One notable character is a security guard and Afghanistan veteran who suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Although it is clear that this light-hearted series is meant for laughs, it may also serve as another starting point for the conversation on medical cannabis and its many beneficial attributes. The latest trailer will give audiences a glimpse into what this new show has in store for cannabis consumers and enthusiasts.
