How Microdosing Will Change the Industry

Published

microdosingThe cannabis industry is quickly maturing—the days when cannabis users just wanted to get insanely high by eating an unknown amount of psychoactive cannabis that was baked into a traditional brownie has passed. Now the edibles industry looks to reach near-perfection when adding the correct dosage to a batch of brownies or the like. Introducing microdosing, a growing trend that aims to ensure that edibles have proper dosing for all cannabis users.

According to Business Insider, edibles in all ranges of categories (from barbeque sauce to chocolates and bottled water) are being produced with a standard of five to 10 milligrams of THC. This low dosage is perfect for someone who isn’t sure what their tolerance level is when it comes to recreational use.

As many seasoned cannabis veterans know, there are rules to eating a traditional edible. Most people cut a brownie or other treat into multiple smaller pieces, and slowly eat that treat to test the THC content. Eating more than what a single person can tolerate can often lead to uncomfortability and sometimes strong anxiety. While no one has ever overdosed by eating an edible, it can be an intimidating experience. “People are a little bit scared of edibles,” said Kristi Knoblich of the cannabis infused chocolate company Kiva Confections.

Companies like Kiva have mastered the creation of their products to create user-friendly infused edibles for “the more casual edible consumer.” Their chocolate bars in particular, which contain anywhere from 60 to 180 milligrams of THC, can easily be divided into 15-45 milligram servings. “It’s that person looking for a glass of wine or beer in the evening [type of] experience. We’re looking for that person who isn’t looking to get blasted,” said Knoblich.

The art of microdosing is sure to become an industry standard as more states legalize cannabis for recreational use. It’s only a matter of time before new states join the recreational club, and it will be up to them to properly educate curious new cannabis users on how to understand edible consumption, as well as how to lean on microdosing to give them a good first experience with cannabis edibles.
