[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]I[/dropcap]n hopes of creating a faster and easier process for medical cannabis applicants, the state of Michigan has rolled out a new way to register cannabis patients. Michigan residents who don’t already have a caregiver can now make an account online an apply for access to medical cannabis.

Director of the Bureau of Medical of Medical Marihuana, Andrew Brisbo, shared that the new online system is a simple process that can issue cards within a matter of days. “We think there’s excitement in the physician community to do those certifications online,” Brisbo said. The Michigan Medical Marihuana Program regulates the Michigan Marihuana Act that was approved in 2008. Since then, the program has made it its mission to conduct registrations “efficiently and effectively.”

Once the online application is completed, people can revisit to check the state of their applications. In order for a patient to apply online for the medical card, they must be with a physician that has completed an online registration. The physician receives notice after the application is submitted and must certify the patient within a 15-day period.

The system rolled out on Oct. 25, and over time will provide more options for medical cannabis patient applications. For now the system handles new applications for patient-only registry cards. As the system develops, patients will be able to renew their cards online as well as replace or withdraw their medical cards. There have already been a handful of cards issued since last Thursday when the system went live.

The arrival of the new online registration may not be the only progressive move for cannabis in Michigan, as residents of the state will also be casting their votes on Nov. 6 to decide on Proposal 1. The vote will decide whether or not adults over 21 can buy, grow and possess recreational cannabis. It will also determine whether adult-use businesses can apply for licenses to grow, manufacture, test and sell cannabis in their facilities.
