Millionaire Michael Llamas, 33, died early Sunday morning after crashing his Lamborghini in downtown San Diego, according to the medical examiner’s office. Llamas built his fortune after founding Medical Marijuana Inc., the makers of CBD-based products, in 2009.

“The company has learned that Michael Llamas died in a traffic accident over the weekend in San Diego,” Medical Marijuana Inc. released in a statement to CBS 8. “The company mourns the loss of one of its visionary founders. Mr. Llamas was an incredible philanthropist and changed countless lives throughout the world.”

Police say Llamas was driving at an excessive speed on Harbor Drive and struck a palm tree near West Broadway around 2 a.m. on November 5.

Llamas’ female passenger was injured after being thrown from the car and was taken to a hospital, where her condition is currently unknown. Llamas was found dead in the driver’s seat. A photojournalist from NBC San Diego tweeted a photo of what was left of Llamas’ car, and it wasn’t much.

Medical Marijuana Inc. describes itself as the “first publicly traded cannabis company in the United States” beginning in 2009. Llamas stepped down from his role at Medical Marijuana Inc. in 2012. Despite his success, Llamas has seen his share of controversy, and was sued for fraud and accused of being involved in a separate Ponzi scheme. A blog is dedicated to exposing the fraud of Llamas family and their associates.

Medical Marijuana Inc., the company the Llamas founded nearly a decade ago, is now worth millions. The company is known for its signature product, Real Scientific Hemp Oil (RSHO) and other CBD-based products including infused gum, capsules, sprays and liquids.

Despite the controversy surround his reputation, Llamas helped put hemp-based CBD products in the global spotlight. A representative of HempMeds, a subsidiary of Medical Marijuana Inc. recently spoke on behalf of patients that depend on CBD at the United Nation’s World Health Organization convention in Geneva, Switzerland.
