Former Fugees vocalist Lauryn Hill is considered by many to be the mother of hip-hop invention. Her critically acclaimed solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, on which she wrote, arranged or produced almost every song, not only earned her five Grammys, including Album of the Year and Best New Artist, but broke new ground by successfully integrating rap, soul, reggae and R&B into a unique, personal sound. Not one for the bright lights of fame and fortune, Hill took a few years off after her success, releasing MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 in 2002, a collection of songs she called “deeply personal” and an album that Rolling Stone called “a public breakdown.” Rebelling against her record label, critics, and all ideas of identity imposed upon her by the media and American culture, Hill is still on her spiritual quest of self-awareness and returned to the stage in 2010 kicking off shows in Australia, and performed at this year’s Coachella Music Festival. She drops into Pomona this month, still keeping it real, and since you never know when she’ll pop up again or release new material—or what to expect when she does—reserving your space as soon as possible seems in order.
