Cayman Islands-based businessman Prentice Panton told local reporters that he is close inking a deal  with Jamaica’s Health Ministry to supply Jamaica with cannabis oil. The Kingston-based Hope Institute has expressed interest in dispensing the oil.

So far, 10 fluid ounces of cannabis oil have been sent as a sample to the hospital until the Hospital’s head doctor returns from vacation. “One of the head doctors will lead doctors on the issue when she comes back. If she wants more we’re gonna give them like a gallon and they’re gonna look at ways of signing a contract with them hopefully where we will be able to supply the entire Health Ministry,” Mr. Panton told Cayman 27.

The cannabis oil is manufactured by Lions Garden, a Cayman-owned cannabis company. Lion’s Garden products depict a symbolic green lion proudly carrying a Rasta-colored flag. The Caymanian company’s cannabis oil has a coconut oil base, but is stronger than most other cannabis oil offerings with 39 percent cannabinoid concentration. The cannabis oil comes in at least three sizes of applicators.

The Hope Institute opened in 1993 as a free hospital for cancer patients. Currently the hospital offers oncology and palliative care to cancer patients in the various stages of the disease. The Lion’s Garden agreed to donate a gallon of cannabis oil to the Hope Institute for cancer research last month.

The company cannot grow legally even though the Cayman Island government legalized cannabis oil in October 2016, which is why the cannabis is imported from Canada and Jamaica. For now, the company has a location set up in Lewis Town Jamaica, where it is developing products in tandem with the University of the West Indies.

Panton is planning on eventually moving his company back to the Cayman Islands have legalized cannabis oil. Panton said he has 42 acres of land prepped for growing with a water source in Frank Sound, Cayman Islands.
