he holidays can be treacherous. Frantic family gatherings, excessive
spending for presents, too much rich food, traveling and the preparations? Oy.
I’m not religious really, but the holidays are great for catching up with
family and old friends, celebrating life and the changing of the seasons. I
attend as many holiday festivities as I can, for every kind of religious event
or spontaneous occasion. I love the many cultural culinary treats, the
diversity of my friends, and participating in different cultural exchanges.

As I usually feel unprepared for this time of year, instead of freaking
out like I always do—immediately demanding that I buy super last minute gifts
and store-bought treats instead of homemade dishes—I’ve decided to just enjoy
the time with all these amazing people. With Matsiyahu on our cover this month,
how could I not? This humble creative genius crosses social boundaries,
embraces multiple lifestyles, cultures and media for his creative process, and
he does it all with gratitude and focus.

As a Hassidic Jew, he is passionate about his faith, which inspires
much of his music and life, but his creative expression, whether it music or
film, is rooted in the beauty and honesty of the human experience. His music is
strong, supportive and relevant. His passion and gratitude is evident in all he
does, and that is inspiring. I want to live a life where I am always grateful,
but it is something I have to practice. Matthew Paul Miller, aka Matisyahu,
reminds me to stay at that practice, and to remember to try and always be
thankful.

On top of all that, last month, the cannabis movement took another leap
in progress in the midterm elections and now has Oregon, Alaska and D.C. walking
into full legalization, with more states decriminalizing or on the way to
legalization as well. Just one more reason to be grateful and calm this holiday
season, even in the face of frantic family gatherings and stressful shopping.

Happy Holidays,
