Cannabis Legislation

A woman in Broward County, Florida received her main-in ballot, however she claimed that the state’s medical cannabis legislation was not on her ballot, according to a report by WSVN. Amendment 2 is also known as the Florida Medical Marijuana Legalization Initiative. If passed, the legislation would permit patients with qualifying conditions to receive a recommendation by a state licensed physician for medical cannabis.

The voter who noticed the discrepancy on her ballot was a women from Broward County, Florida. She claimed that a ballot she received in the mail did not contain Amendment 2 whatsoever. Her attorney is named Norm Kent, gave a statement to WSVN. “But it’s like when you go to a restaurant, something’s not on the menu, you don’t order it.” Kent stated. “So you fill out the ballot, you go from page one, and you’ll see it, you go from page one to two, and it goes from Amendment 1 to Amendment 3. There’s no Amendment 2 on it.”

Kent is concerned that this may not be the only ballot that is missing the cannabis legislation Amendment. He filed a lawsuit on Thursday, and he hopes the issue will be handled prior to Election Day on November 8. “We have to find out whether there’s 100 ballots, 1,000 ballots or 10,000 ballots.” Kent stated.

Dr. Brenda Snipes is the Broward County Supervisor of Elections. She told the Sun Sentinel that they don’t believe this is a large-scale issue. “When you’re dealing with this much paper and this many people, we may have made a mistake, but I haven’t heard a lot of people saying, ‘I don’t have it either,’” Dr. Snipes said.

If you’re a voter in Broward County, Florida, who is voting using a mail-in ballot, make sure that Amendment 2 is on your ballot.
