Once again, members of the cannabis industry are proving that they care about battling homelessness and other issues. Holiday Heroes, a cannabis-related charity organization, donated over $100,000 worth of goods to the homeless in Los Angeles on Dec. 23, just in time for the holidays. The effort was led by BigMike Straumietis, CEO of Advanced Nutrients, one of the largest cannabis-related nutrient suppliers.

Over 50 volunteers, including Advanced Nutrients staff members, filled over 1,500 backpacks containing rain ponchos, flashlights, blankets, washcloths, feminine hygiene products, socks, wet wipes, hand sanitizer, soap, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, toys and more. The volunteer effort enabled many of the city’s homeless population to receive a holiday gift this year.

“Nothing gives me more pleasure than helping others, than giving back to the community,” Straumietis stated. “I believe every company that can afford to start a charity should. All you have to do is look around your local community and see how you can help. I started Holiday Heroes in Bulgaria to feed the homeless on Easter and Christmas, because there were simply no other charities doing it there.”

The team volunteered at Los Angeles LGBT/Youth Center on Highland, Union Rescue Mission in downtown L.A., and the Hope Gardens Family Center in Sylmar. The team also attended to random homeless people in Los Angeles’ Skid Row. “Here in the great state of California where I live, homelessness is the major problem, especially because we have great weather all year,” Straumietis continued. “While we love working with shelters to help those families, I think our major focus on Skid Row is helping the people who need it most because they’re not getting the support others are.”

Holiday Heroes was launched in Bulgaria in 2012 and expanded to Los Angeles last holiday season. Holiday Heroes has fed over 30,000 needy families since its inception.
