How and when did your dispensary start up?

Buddy’s started in April 2010 in a 5,000 square-foot warehouse in Mountain View. Most cities back then banned cannabis dispensaries, so following litigation with the city, we were forced to relocate in July 2010 to our second store in Sunnyvale. That lasted all of four weeks until we were again forced to leave and relocate. In August 2010, we set up for the third time at 4140 Stevens Creek Boulevard in San Jose and stayed there until November 2015 when we moved to our current location—a 21,000 square-foot dispensary and cultivation center.

What’s the story behind the name of your dispensary?

We chose the name ‘Buddy’s’ for our dispensary because we wanted to convey a warm sense of compassion (We are your Buddy!), as well as play on the word bud/cannabis. We chose as our logo “Buddy The Goat” because goats are cute, playful, smart and remind us of green, lush farms.

What does your dispensary offer customers that they can’t find anywhere else?

We are well-known for our platinum level customer service, exclusive top-shelf strains, and a wide selection of products at rock-bottom prices. We have an open, friendly environment and strive to build long-term, trusting relationships with all of our patients.

How has the cannabis industry changed since you have been in the business? Where would you like to see it go?

During our seven years in operation, we have seen some great progress, including new product offerings, and improved consistency and reliability in cannabis products. Every industry needs to earn the trust of its customers, and the cannabis industry is getting there as we continue to innovate.

What are the biggest challenges you face in this industry as a dispensary? Biggest joys?

The biggest challenge in this industry, as well as the biggest joy, is having the local authorities approve your facilities and operations. You cannot legally grow or sell cannabis under California’s laws unless the local authorities give their consent.

What is the one thing you want patients to know about your dispensary?

We want cannabis patients to know that Buddy’s will continue acting as a market disruptor—constantly improving quality while lowering prices. The results at our onsite grow operation continue to exceed our expectations in terms of quality and yield.

If someone wanted to open a dispensary and get their feet wet in the industry, what advice or counsel would you give them?

If a person is interested in opening a legal cannabis business, then I would advise them to first contact the city manager’s office of their local jurisdiction to see what type of cannabis businesses, if any, are allowed.

What is the most important thing you hope to accomplish while in the cannabis community?

Our greatest accomplishment has been the opportunity to give back to our local community. Buddy’s has always been grateful for the chance to help the less fortunate in our society, and we have donated tens of thousands of dollars to local charities, including food banks, homeless shelters, animal shelters, local music events, the American Red Cross, the American Cancer Society and many other great organizations.
