Black Smoke: Healing and Ayahuasca Shamanism in the Amazon is a true story of a woman who went to the Ecuadoran rain forest
in search of healing from cancer. In 2000, author and professor of music,
Margaret De Wys was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her doctors urged her to
pursue conventional treatments, which included radiation and chemotherapy.  But, De Wys opted to find another way.  At an event in Guatemala, she met a Shuar medicine man from Ecuador,
Carlos. De Wys does a wonderful
job describing her trips into the remote parts of the jungle of Ecuador to work
with Carlos. After having
undergone such intense personal experiences in Guatemala with Carlos, she was thoroughly
changed on the inside, both emotionally and physically. Black
Smoke
explores the ancient healing arts of plant-based therapies, something
we’ve lost sight of in much of our Western culture. A fascinating read about a
difficult journey.
