The second season of Bill Nye Saves the World airs on Dec. 29 on Netflix.  In an interview with CNET on Dec. 19, Nye revealed that he will buy cannabis on the first episode of season 2 and will study it for scientific purposes.

Nye obtained a medical cannabis recommendation and visited a dispensary in Hollywood, California in the first episode.“I got a license to buy marijuana in California,” Nye told CNET. “Didn’t go to a doctor’s office. Didn’t present any evidence that I was a good or bad person. I just got it on the internet and then went to a store and bought it.”

Nye admitted that he does not consume cannabis himself, but is interested in furthering research on the plant. He confronted the issues that slow progress in the cannabis community, including the federal status under Schedule I.

“Nobody’s really sure how it works. Nobody’s really sure what it does,” Nye continued. “And so, there’s a very strong argument that keeping it as a Schedule I drug is not based on any science. Schedule I means that it’s presumed to be addicting and it’s presumed that it has no medical value. But people use marijuana and marijuana extracts for all sorts of medical applications. You got to think there’s something to it. Nobody’s sure how marijuana works, so we got to study marijuana more and find out really what the active ingredients are.”

The Emmy-nominated series highlights celebrities and scientists and was launched last April. Recently the White House issued a list of forbidden words to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention including “evidence-based” and “science-based,” although the agency is pushing back. But the series explores heated topics like climate change, gender and now cannabis. Season 2 also features a segment called #BillMeetsScience Twitter that will showcase international scientists.
